Time

People consistently recall and typically frame their museum memories within a temporal context; for example, statements like “it was on the weekend,” or “early in the fall.” In the particular set of recollections presented here, virtually all could remember approximately how long they spent in the museum, despite the fact that the visit had occurred more than a year prior. Research suggests that the recollection of the temporal context of a learning situation is a crucial ingredient in successfully remembering the details of an experience.23 Time and place also are strongly linked in memory. Memory expert Endel Tulving has categorized this kind of memory for events as “episodic memory.”24

Finally, it’s important to note that the memories of these six individuals were elicited in isolation; each person was interviewed one-on-one. It is fair to assume that if the same interviews were conducted with everyone together as a group, the total sum of recollections would have been richer as each memory helped to trigger additional memories by another member of the group. As pointed out by the Russian sociocultural psychologist Lev Vygotsky, memories are both internal and external; memories exist within both the individual and the group.25
